The Johnson-led series comes in at number one 3rd place of the week with 18.4 million views. hours watched and 3.9 million unique viewers. The show is the first of Netflix and HBO’s new deal to crack the streaming service’s Top 10, underscoring the success that has come from the deal.

Ballers sees Johnson play the role of Spencer Strasmore, a retired NFL player who becomes a financial manager for other NFL players. The sports comedy sees Johnson trying to help his clients while learning how to navigate his new career path. When the series was airing on HBO from 2015 to 2019, it received generally positive reviews from critics, who highlighted Johnson’s performance.

Part of why the series may be finding success on Netflix is because of its grounded story influenced by the real world. While Ballers is not based on a true story, it pulls inspiration from the real-life stories of major NFL athletes to create its fictionalized plot.
